New blog layout, work update, and hurricanes are a comin'!

Hey all, this is your Friday update. Right now we're catching the last (hopefully) of the outer hurricane Erin bands that are hitting us right now. We got 6" of rain yesterday and around another 6" today. Streets are flooded and over the side of the curb with water. I've never seen such hellish lightning like I've seen in the past couple days. I used to say "I don't understand why everyone down here FREAKS over thunderstorms like they do. We get 'em up north and whatever!" Well that was my thought until yesterday and today. I now understand why people freak out when they get nasty like they have been down here the past few days. Yesterday it was bad outside, but whatever, I needed to get some money out of the van for a pop. I get about 10' from being back inside the building when everything around me lights up and I hear the fastest and loudest lightning/thundercrack I've ever heard. I swear I jumped a foot in the air and was shaking for ten minutes afterwards. Today, it was bad again, but nothing like yesterday until we got home from lunch (me and the shorties). It was downpouring and lightning, so I told the kids to stay in the van while I get the umbrella. I get back to the van with it and just as I open the door another thundercrack/lightning like I've never heard, hits about a block from us. I open the door and yell "RUUUUUN KIDS, RUUUUUUN!!! FORGET THE UMBRELLA, GET WET AND RUUUUUN!!!" The wind was horrible, and I couldn't get the umbrella steady, so I just flew the baby side door open, threw the umbrella inside, grabbed the baby, and ran inside. We were all soaked. It was crazy, we were wet, but we then laughed when we got inside. Power and cable has been on and off since then (a couple hours ago), but seems to be on for (hopefully) good now. I guess hurricane Dean is closing in on us by Wednesday. The weather channel says that a low pressure system NE of Florida will really affect it as well. If the system comes through first, it will pull the hurricane up more into the US, which is bad of course, but if it comes in later, then it will push it down towards Mexico more, which is worse for them. So, it will be interesting to see how it all goes. It's really interesting to see it all around you, but a lil' scary as well.

This past week at work, Brent went on a cruise, so I was busy to say the least. Of course the usual "never had this type" of issues came up. So, from working on those, to the other regular issues that just pop up (ie: Help Desk type of issues), I barely had any time to do anything I planned to do (as usual). One thing I finally worked on was getting our KVM Console and Switch set up and functioning. What that is, is a monitor like the following picture, where we can flip back and forth in the server room, to various servers we need to get on and use. It's a huge upgrade to our previous system of plugging in and unplugging wires to any server we want to use. Now we just click a button, pull out the monitor and keyboard/mouse tray, and do whatever we need to do. I cleaned up our server room, tightened up some cabling, and planned on further upgrades I want to do in there. I ordered all the new pc's, laptops, and servers we'll be upgrading to this fiscal year as well, so that's a big item checked up. Next step is to actually install and set them up. So basically the fun is just beginning. I cleaned up our office as well, which needs even more, but when you share an 8 x 8 office (if that) with another person, every little bit helps. Next week I've got some software to upgrade in our studios, and the desktop/laptops to setup/install. We found out that the station "really" wants to help us get some training, so we only have to decide on which week works for us to go get training on CISCO in October, and some MCSE 2003 certification classes in November or later. We also found out that Tim (our president) wants us to forget about the NAB (Nat'l Assoc. of Broadcasters) convention in N. Carolina in November, because it's just radio, and wants us to go to the one in Vegas in April that is the whole industry-wide, HUGE, yearly convention. He said it doesn't make sense to only go to the radio one because it limits us to seeing what else we could implement for the station in the future. I agreed but in my head don't yet see why going to that makes sense since all I know we do is radio, which is what the N.C. focuses on. The one in Vegas focuses on radio, tv, and all other means of communication. It'll be sweet, and I'm eager to see what it's like since I've seen the radio one last year. Frankly it makes sense because we've got to fly and spend the same amount of time away either way. This way though, I'm hoping to get B to fly out with me for a day or two and hang out in the Strip.

What do you think about the newest layout of my blog? I'm playing with the actual code of the layout, instead of using whatever theme I like from the list they have. I'm going to tweak it more and more and see what I like and don't like, and then am going to try and do my own blog instead of using another site, so that I can further customize it and maybe throw up some other things I have thought about doing. Who knows, maybe I'll just keep this and do what I want on here. We'll see how much energy I have when the time comes.

Tonight we're watching the debut of "High School Musical 2" on Disney. It's pretty sad that we all are so pumped for it that we're making a big to-do about it. Jaelyn made signs for the house to put up. She got her stuffed animals. We're making popcorn and getting munchies and pop. We're going to brave the floods and go up the street to the store to get some stuff for the hurricane next week...batteries, water, canned goods, etc, just to try and beat any people we can. Thank God for DVR!

Well you guys have a safe weekend. I'm on "vacation" since noon-thirty today, until Monday. We're going to hit my stepdad Steve's brother's beach house tomorrow and stay the night. Hit my favorite restaurant, Rainforest Cafe, and just chill out and relax on our "vacation". Hope it doesn't rain, and hope you all have just as much fun!

Lastly, congrats to Stan for getting a new job offer! I know he's been looking forward to the offer he got, so I pray he truly is blessed by this new opportunity! Congrats, bud!

God Bless,
E

PS...Doug...WE GOT ONE GAME OUT OF THE THREE, SORRY NO SWEEP FOR YOUR REDS! HA HA HA!!! AND WE WON TODAY...1ST PLACE AGAIN! WOO HOO!!!
