If it's not Scottish, it's CRAP!!!

Hopefully most of you will get the joke of my subject line. It's a quote from an old Michael Myers' skit on Saturday Night Live. One of my favorite oldies!

The reason I mention it, is only because it loosely tied into my post. Today, I got to "work" by playing golf again in a company-sponsored foursome. I know what you're saying..."What in the world?! Golf isn't work! You're a loser!" If you saw a few months ago, I had a similar post about how I got to do the same thing. It's something we're trying to do as a station to get even more personal with our listeners. Since there are a bunch of us on staff that like to golf, and we can get some free passes to some church-sponsored or christian-commuity-sponsored events
it's a no brainer to hook something like this up. They get to have their event mentioned on the air, which helps to draw interest to the cause, and to sign more people up for the event, and we get a free round of golf, some goodies, usually a lunch, and get to meet some nice people. Finally tying together the subject line and my post, the reason I mentioned Scottish, is because the course(s) we played on were patterned after a Scottish style course. There were three 9 hole courses at this golf club. One was Scottish, one Irish, and one European. We did the Scottish and European for our holes. Very fun because of the rolling hills and NO trees for me to lose balls to, but very hard because they were super long, with tons of sand traps. My slice decided to play with me as well today, so I didn't have a good time until around hole 12. From then on, my game went up a few notches. I hit a few nice drives (I think I hit one around 257 against the wind!), a couple nice chips, and then a couple nice puts. One of my putts lipped out after the 45 feet I hit it. Another one dropped after 25 feet. "Those are the kind of shots that make you keep coming back." Amen.

Here's a link to the golf course site. The course is called Magnolia Creek. BEAUTIFUL COURSE!!!

I couldn't figure out what was causing my poor play early on. Everyone says it's because I'm new to the game. I think that's part of it, sure, but I know for fact that there was another reason that messed with me mentally. I checked out the website for the course beforehand, to look at it, the clubhouse, course rules, etc, and I saw that they required khaki pants or better. I have gained too much weight to fit into any of my old fuddy duddy khaki's, so I went in some jeans. Down here in Houston though, I'm noticing that while jeans may be more comfortable indoors than khakis (to me anyway), outside they're horrible! They get heavy fast, and when you're sweating, it just seems to me that they get heavier and heavier. That wasn't the big problem though. What was the issue to me was that I saw a TON of people wearing SHORTS! SHORTS, people...STINKING...SHORTS!!! That's what I golf in. That's what I'm comfortable wearing when I golf. Shorts, and then any kind of top. Sure, I'd rather go shorts and a t-shirt, but I don't care what I'm wearing if I can wear shorts. Being one of the "big folk" here on planet earth, we need less clothing to let the heat escape our bodies. All the heat I had today seemed to go straight to my lower portion of my body. Yuck yuck yuck. I didn't stink or anything, but it just felt gross. My shower couldn't come fast enough. Nuff said.

Since it was a best ball shotgun start, I was worried that we'd be slow and have people behind us watching us, getting impatient that we couldn't go faster, and generally making me even more nervous than I already was. We didn't have that, because we were the last group going through. Halleluah! Whenever the beverage/snack girl, marshall, or other golfers would come around, I'd tell them to just keep on going and wouldn't hit until they left. We had two people group up with us, since we only had two of our foursome filled out. Max and Stephanie were their names, and they were really nice. They immediately made us feel at ease with grouping with them. Still though, it took me a lot of holes to feel comfortable hitting in front of them. In case you wanted to know, our final group score was a 68 (4 under par for the course). Our score with our handicap was a 44. We got third in the whole tournament!

All in all, as usual, it was a blast. As Jim said..."A bad day at the golf course is still better than a great day at the office." Amen to that! I'm loving the game of golf more and more and more. Just getting outside and basking in God's nature. The grass...the sun...the wind. What a game, even if you stink at it like I do.

Wish I would have remembered to bring my stupid camera.

God Bless,
E
